All it takes is for one person to successfully go viral doing these challenges, and the rest follow in hopes of getting internet famous.
The "Benadryl Challenge" is a prime example. This challenge involves taking large amounts of the allergy medication for it's hallucinogenic qualities. The drug causes seizures, heart attacks and even strokes. User's have been posting themselves under the effects of this drug, making it a trend.
Another dangerous challenge that went viral on TikTok is the "Skull Breaker Challenge." The purpose of this is to cause the middle person to fall back hitting their head. This challenge has caused serious injuries and even death.
The cereal challenge is the most disgusting one yet, it involves one person laying down with their mouth open and another pouring milk and cereal into their mouth, then proceeding to eat it out. Not only is it repulsive but it can be a major choking hazard. The human mouth contains an estimate 20 billion germs and bacteria. Now imagine eating cereal out of someone's mouth, for TikTok "clout" is unhinged behavior.
It's not just physical challenges that are dangerous on TikTok the platform has been ridiculed for promoting damaging trends. Such as extreme dieting and exercising, these may cause eating disorders and body dysmorphia among impressionable young people.
While TikTok has taken steps to remove and strike content that promotes dangerous trends and behaviors, it can be challenging to stop such trends from happening. Parents and guardians should monitor how much time their children spend on the platform and encourage them not to participatate in viral dangerous challenges.
As a society, we need to start taking the dangers of social media seriously. We cannot simply dismiss these challenges and behaviors as harmless fun. Instead, we must work together to create a culture of responsibility and safety on platforms like TikTok. Only then can we truly enjoy the benefits of social media without putting ourselves or our loved ones at risk.
