Adam silvera my favourite young adult author.
Young adult literature has to be my favorite genre of books. The relatability of reading books young people navigating the struggles of life, be it depression, suicide, self love, career, family etc is very Fulfilling. Authors that are able to create characters that are completely fictional, which people can relate to are therapists in their own right that use literature to heal readers. Seeing yourself in a character, reading their journey, cheering them on and wholeheartedly wanting them to make it out alive are emotions that are indescribable.
My favourite young adult author is Adam silvera a young lgbtq member, writing novels that are set in alternate realities but also have elements of truth, and Adam's own struggles in them. Adam's books are centred around young LGBTQ individuals navigating through the heartbreaks of life, yet its story lines have a sort of other worldly unimaginable feel to them.
Be it “more happy than not’’ the story of Aaron soto a sixteen-year-old boy plagued with the sorrow of his father’s suicide, finding out he’s gay and falling for his best friend Thomas. Aaron goes into a deep depressive state. The pain of losing his father and now best friend proves unbearable for Aaron. So, he opts for the easy way out, a way that would instantly make him forget the traumas that torment him. A medical procedure that promises to block out the memory of losing his father and the pain that comes with it. I’m, sure if this medical procedure were available most of us would have it, regardless of the side effects. The unsatisfiable need to forget traumatic events that keep us from living a normal life would outweigh any disadvantages, that might come after the procedure.
Adam silvera also wrote my all-time favourite from him “they both die at the end’’ a gut ranching story that lives up to its title. Mateo and Rufus two teenagers who get death notices from death cast, an organisation that alerts you that you’re going to die in the next 24hours. It doesn’t say when or how but your death is inevitable. Mateo and Rufus’s paths cross and they decide to spend their last day together. How would you spend your last day, if you were told it’s your last day? Would you spend it with the people you love? or would spend it overthinking how death might sneak up on you and try your hardest to dodge it? This novel depicts a world were people get a chance to say goodbye, were death tells you its coming. Quite scary if you think about it but, there are people out there wishing they had spent those last precious moments with their loved ones, this is better than any abrupt ending.
