DO AFRICAN BLACK LIVES MATTER?.
The black lives matter movement is an internationally recognized activist movement, originating in the African-american community, that campaigns against violence and systematic racism against black American people.
the movement was founded on the 13th July 2013 by Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors and Opal Tometi.
The movement was founded in hopes to end police brutality against black American people, providing a safe platform for black people to express themselves. The movement gives a voice to black people that have for years been deprived of their human right to live free from discrimination.
With the founders of the movement being American and most of its activities taking place in America, the question that comes to mind is are African lives included in the black lives matter movement?. Yes the movement claims to be inclusive of all black lives around the world, But that has not been fully practiced in Africa where majority of the people are black.
It is safe to say that the movement is US centered and concentrates more on black people from the US than any other part of the world. Initially the movement was founded to address gun violence in the US which is amazing looking at the amount of people dying in the world everyday related to gun violence. But what does this do for African black lives?. With the movement being internationally recognized and claiming to be advocating to all black lives around the world, nothing that has really made an impact on African lives has been done so far.
Being of black origin black African people can relate to the works of the movement, but there is still divisions between both African and American black communities. As some African communities feel the movement has not fully represented them, as black people first and Africans second. Given the movement has so much power to influence how the world see's black people today.
In response to the criticism that African issues aren't valued even dismissed in BLM spaces founder Tometi says, ''This isn't an accurate assessment, people are raising issues that impact Africans on the continent as well as Africans in america''. Though this might be true the movement has not fully aligned itself with communities in Africa what problems they are experiencing and what can be publicly done to ease their suffering. Given the fact that most if not all countries in Africa are third world countries. Not to say that African communities suffer more than the Americans but creating a feeling of inclusion amongst all black people around the world gaining more supporters and followers.
The efforts of the black lives matter movement are appreciated but there is still a long way for the movement to go if it is to advocate and liberate all black lives around the world.
